Fartleks

Yes, I just said Fartleks. Don’t get excited. Fartleks have nothing to do with flatulence.  In fact, it’s a Swedish name for speed play.  Fartleks are useful for training. They are split up into intervals and encourage you to test your speed and endurance.  If you’re looking to improve your time, it’s encouraged that you sprint and set up a few fartleks during your training.

Last Saturday, we set up a series up 6 fartleks during our training run. We went for 5 miles along Yale, onto the Walnut Trail, into the housing community on Deerfield and back. Unfortunately it was hot so this was a demanding training considering we were also pushing ourselves to do our best.

Tami and I are walk coaches/mentors. It’s hard to walk and incorporate a fartlek unless you jog or run during that time period which I guess we could have but we were too worried about some of the team mates we were watching ahead of us and busy dreaming about living at the small, cottage-like homes off of Deerfield.

This is my second season coaching with Team in Training. It’s the Fall season but feels like summer. Well, I guess it is Summer and we’re under heat advisory. Sometimes it’s either too cold to be out or it’s too hot. It’s never stable. I have two more marathons left for the end of the year – Long Beach and LA. I’m also debating Las Vegas in December but we’ll see.

This is the shortest season and will be over soon in October and then I’m off until February when Summer season starts up again and we train for San Diego and Alaska. I’m really looking forward to Alaska and the Summer solstice. I have never seen anything like that and the course is a wilderness trail with a 9 hour limit. I might attempt another full marathon.
