Family and Friendship = Chicken Soup for the Soul

It’s Christmas Day. Last night and early this morning, our family celebrated their first Christmas. It was an exciting time for us. We decorated our first tree, wrapped presents, and eagerly watched each other unwrap those gifts. It was also a bit awkward. Do you unwrap presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? Is there a ritual? We’re Sikh so this was foreign to us but we made the best of it and had a great morning.

This week’s #reverb10 prompt asks: What healed you this year? Was it sudden, or a drip-by-drip evolution? How would you like to be healed in 2011?

Healed? My first thought was medication but what has truly healed me this year was a deeper connection with my family and establishing new friendships. What’s truly remarkable is our family finally embracing the fact that we live in America and that it’s OK to celebrate some Western traditions like Christmas and not give it a religious meaning but rather see it as an opportunity to come together, exchange gifts, and spend quality time together.

For next year, I want to continue to deepen my friendships, figure out the business of Christmas, and continue healing myself via my family and friends. They are my medication and my source of healing. Happy Holidays everyone. I hope each of you have a wonderful holiday season and a bright New Year.
