A Few Random Facts About Me

1.) I’m terrified of being cold but I love the fall and winter seasons.  I like to see the leaves change color, the smell of fireplaces, various baked goods, wearing warm fuzzy sweaters, xmas decorations, and how you’ll always catch a smile on someone’s face because it’s the holidays.

2.) I always, always, always wear a sweater because I’m always, always, always cold so please don’t predict the weather by the choice of my clothing.

3.) I own lots of clothes, shoes, and handbags (Coach and Dooney and Bourke, will soon be adding Chanel to that collection.).  You should see my walk-in closet.  I have shoes and handbags to match every article of clothing. I LOVE boots!

4.) I collect shot glasses and keychains from every place and request that my friends bring back a memento from places they visit too.

5.) I’m possessive about my things.  What’s mine is mine.  I’m particularly obsessive about my car – the only people who can drive my car are valets and auto repair men/women.

6.) I think I have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).  Everything always has to be perfect.  I can’t go to sleep unless everything is clean and put away and when I slip up or get lazy; I drive myself nuts.

7.) In 1995, the Fresno Bee was having a writing contest for $100 cash and I decided to enter.  The Features editor was excited about my entry (that I won) and offered me a position on the Teen Corps Press so from 1995 to 1999 (my years at Kerman High School), I wrote semi-monthly articles about the struggles of being a teen.

8.) Growing up, I always wanted to be a doctor or a writer but doctor always won.  In 1999, a counselor encouraged me to write a business plan because of my writing skills and because of a career test I took.  However writing a business plan and writing a column about teen struggles are two different things but I won 1st place for my business plan (getting Computer Science majors to build computers for college credit for low income households – not highly creative but that was the current need/demand) and this prompted me to change my major to Business and Retail Marketing.

9.) I love tech toys but the smart phone addiction grew thanks to Bank of America giving me a BlackBerry for work reasons. That addiction led to me buying my first iPhone – the rest is history. Before that I owned a RAZR and could care less about having a cell phone.

10.) I completed 5 marathon events in 2008 and in total have run 11 races.  I have injured my back, dislocated a hip, suffered a knee injury, and gotten a few black toenails but the experience was totally worth it!

11.) I think I’m allergic to the heat.  Little bumps always form on my hands and arms…

12.) I grew 2 foot sizes because my feet swelled during all those marathons.  Eww..

13.) My birthday is on December 30th but starting December 1st until my birthday, I do something special for myself to celebrate 30 days of me.  Some people think I’m conceited for doing that but I think there’s nothing wrong in celebrating the fact that you’re alive.

14.)  I believe in retail therapy and I’m a shopaholic.  I think I get it from my Dad.

15.) I grew up in a small town (Kerman) outside of Fresno, CAwhich is one of the 5th largest cities in CA.  I’m a farmer’s daughter.  I remember running around our 20 acre property one day and thinking there was nothing but farmland in my destiny.

16.) I am a Sikh not a Muslim, a Hindu, a Pakistani, or Islamic.  Sikhism has been in existence for roughly 600 years and I am from northwestern India from the state of Punjab bordering Pakistan.  Learn more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikhism

17.) English is not my first language.  I learned Hindi and Punjabi first.

18.) My first day of school was horrible. I didn’t speak English and everyone else did so I ran away. That incident led to several years of ridicule, bullying, and heart break until the day I graduated high school and left for college.

19.) I was a loner in school and couldn’t wait to leave. See #18.

20.) In July 2007, I got up off the couch and decided to do something different with my life.  I didn’t know what that was until I went to go check my mail and found a flier for Team in Training.  I felt as though someone had slapped me in the face.  At first, TNT was a way for me to get in shape and meet new people however it quickly became more than that.  TNT raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and I have met many people affected by blood cancer and realized that my small worries were nothing compared to theirs.

21.) I have an artificially aligned jaw.

22.) The day I was born was like no other. Read about in my about me page.

23.) I’m a voracious reader. I blame that on my late Grandfather. We used to walk to the library every day with a little red wagon. I look at my collection of books, smile, and think about him.

24.) In October 2007, I moved to Lake Forest.  The day I moved in a fire started 10 miles away in Santiago Canyon and approached Foothill Ranch within a day (which is 4 miles away from me).  That was a very scary time in my life; I thought I would have to evacuate.  Great welcome home present, right?

25.) You can reach me via text, email, Facebook faster than you can by phone even though all those functions are on my phone.  I’m just not a phone person. If you call me, I probably won’t answer.

26.) I love to sleep but hate the thought of going to bed. Once I’m in bed, I hate the thought of getting up. Sometimes sleep seems like a waste of time to me and completely unnecessary.

27.) There is a select group of people in my life that know what I’m thinking and feeling at all times; it’s kind of like a vampire blood bond and I love those people for paying such close attention to me.

28.) I have a severe water phobia. An angry instructor once pushed me into the water and I almost drowned.

29.) Earlier this year, I adopted Roxy, my adorable calico cat. I’ve never owned a cat before so I was a little nervous but Roxy fills a huge hole in my heart. She makes me laugh and I love having her here.

30.) Last year, I started writing a food blog it has evolved into a journey about learning how to cook, exploring food around me and I’ve discovered I’d like to travel and write about food one day.

I read number 10 and immediately thought: “awesome!” But then I read the second part of that entry and it hurt just a little :-/

Still, great work and quite the accomplishment!

LOL!  That was great! I do shopping therapy as well, have two cats that keep my heart laughing and totally love the idea of celebrating 30 days of you.  You have had an interesting life and it just reinforces that everyone has a story and they are all interesting.  I am glad you overcame the hardships in school.  Its really terrible you had to endure the ridicule.

What a great job writing your “about me” page. I enjoyed it, was an easy read and clearly I know you better than most now, but you know nothing about me! That’s how it went on my first date with my wife.

I had thirty five questions (we met on Match.com) and I had all the answers, but at the end of the night she knew nothing about me. Mystery can be a great thing…

    • http://about.me/sukhrajbeasla Sukhraj Beasla

I’ve heard some good and bad things about Match.com but I’m glad it worked out for you guys. Mystery is intriguing :)

Hey Suki, really great post! I feel like I kind of know you now :) And, after reading, I’d like to know you. When I saw your comment on food (#30), I checked out your Yelp link and was highly impressed. I don’t know anyone that active on Yelp. Very cool. BTW, do you watch Man. vs. Food? I can’t enough of that show. Also, your name is very cool. Thanks for sharing a bit about you!

    Cheers :)
